Life in Likuni: A Story of Survival
In the quiet area of Likuni, Lilongwe, two elderly siblings, Sembereka Banda (80) and his sister Nagama (77), face the twilight of their years in hardship. Once full of dreams, their lives are now shaped by poverty, illness, and the uncertainty of tomorrow
The Burden of Sickness and Caregiving
Sembereka’s health has deteriorated so much that he is now bedridden, fully dependent on his sister’s care. Despite her own frailty, Nagama devotes herself to looking after her brother—feeding him, cleaning him, and ensuring he feels loved. Yet the physical and emotional strain weighs heavily on her shoulders.
An Uncertain Shelter
For years, the siblings have been living in a temporary house provided by a kind neighbor. But this shelter is not permanent, and they often face harassment from people who come to steal their few belongings. With no land of their own they sold it long ago to settle debts—the siblings have nothing to fall back on.
Hunger and Hardship
Meals are a rare luxury. Many days, Sembereka and Nagama go without food, leaning only on each other for comfort and turning to prayer for strength. Their love keeps them strong, but deep down they long for a safe and permanent home, where they can live in peace without fear of hunger or theft.
A Ray of Hope: Zion Daughter’s Visit
Recently, a small light of hope reached them through the Zion Daughter Organization. A project officer visited their home and delivered essentials:
-
Soap
-
Cooking oil
-
Flour
-
Lotion
-
Salt
The gifts brought temporary relief, but the siblings know that their needs go far beyond what was given. They yearn for a future where they can live with dignity, safety, and stability.
Their Dream: A Place to Call Home
What Sembereka and Nagama need most is a plot of land and a simple house—a safe haven where they can rest without fear. Their request is humble but urgent: support to secure a permanent home and basic necessities to sustain their lives.
